Character Name: Gaelen
Species: Bronze dragon
Age: 537 years old (born in mid-summer)
Gender: Male
Description: Gaelen is an enormous dragon, not only when compared with the average of other species, but also for his own kind. He measures eighty-four feet from tip of nose to tip of tail and about twenty-six feet high at the shoulder, with a wingspan of just under one hundred and fifty feet. Naturally, this makes them a tad small for him, and as such he is not very good at flying.
Gaelen's appearance is a bit unusual for his species, and this is due to his birth(see bio). His scales are a bright red, mixed with dark orange, and the base of some scales are bright yellow. The scales running from below his jaw, down his neck, and to the base of his tail are mostly orange-brown, with speckles of yellow on them. His scales unifrmly become darker on his extremeties, except for the yellow spots. The thick, leathery skin of his wings is a uniform deep red, no other color to them whatsoever.
Gaelen is muscular, as far as dragons can look. He is the kind of dragon you might expect to destroy mountains in his anger, and he looks capable of such as well. His body is powerful, yet sleek, without much bulk. The muscles in his shoulders and front legs are most pronounced, for they must hold him aloft and move his massive wings in flight. His claws are short and thick, yet sharp, such a dark red that it is almost black. His fangs, which are nearly a foot long, are sharp as well, sharp enough to cut one of the few mammals left on pyrallis in two.
Gaelen's appearance is fierce to be certain, but these are signs of his advancing age. His scales are cracked and chipped at the ends, some slightly blackened, the ends of his wings cut in places and generally scarred as well. He has several scars on his underside, where smaller dragons have attacked him in previous battles, and there are three scars on his face. They begin above his left eyebrow ridge, cross over his eye(one on either side, and the middle one crossing the middle) and travel down his face to the end of his nose, where his left nostril is slightly torn, and he is missing a piece of his lip. His right eye is bright orange, with yellow slashes inside, and a ring of red surrounding it. His left eye is not there at all. Whatever caused the scarring on that eye also removed it. There is merely a hole where this eye should be, and it can be quite painful at times, when the wind is blowing sand about and into this empty socket.
Personality: Gaelen is, for the most part, a gentle giant. He does not like to fight, but he will defend himself against any who wish him harm. In conversation, he is slow to speak and tends to think for a few seconds about his reply before actually speaking. This said, he can also be very opinionated at times, and will sometimes speak his mind without thinking as he so often did in his youth. He can also be commanding, and occasionally sarcastic. Never has he been known to be fatherly or affectionate.
Gaelen is extremely difficult to anger, but once he is aroused, defeating him is like trying to defeat a mountain. No matter how many times he is hit, he never seems to be affected, and it seems that he will never fall. His claws are sharp enough to cut through the thickest hide, and combined with his prodigious strength he can defeat any known opponent.
In his youth, he used to live for adventure, but he has mellowed out in his middle-age years, and he enjoys activities that stimulate the mind more than anything else now. He enjoys mazes in particular, whether he be constructing them or solving them, and he likes other games of logic as well, though he is not too fond of trickery. He also enjoys reading, whether it be fantasy, legends, or old histories of times long before this one. Still another recent interest he has developed is art. He particularly likes sculpture, and though he has no gift for it himself, he does collect certain art pieces.
Bio: Gaelen was born as one of three siblings to a female bronze dragon named Mila. Though Gaelen never knew his father(whose name was Baren), he has been told about him. His father was allegedly part gold dragon, and that is where Gaelen gains the peculiar yellow spots on his scales from. His siblings inherited this color as well, though they had barely any of the spots on them at all.
He was raised as most dragons are, until he left his mother at the age of fifty accompanied by his siblings. Both his sister and brother were smaller than he, though his brother was smallest by far. His sister, Kaycina, was only a little smaller than he, and she grew faster at first, so that she was larger until they reached their sixtieth year. At that point, Gaelen began a growth spurt that left both of his siblings in the dust for a time.
Gaelen's younger brother, Caith, was always small and meek. Kaycina was serene and hard to anger. Gaelen, however, was different. He had a fiery temper all through his adolescence and well into his adulthood. This temper got him in trouble more than once... and caused him pain as well.
When the siblings were all about eighty, they met up with a red dragon, who talked down to them because he was in a bad mood. Caith and Kaycina were going to simply walk away, but Gaelen returned the remarks with insults and provoked the dragon into attack. Kaycina and Gaelen both got away, but Caith was caught by the red dragon and presumably killed. Kaycina and Gaelen never saw his body, but they both assume that he is dead. Kaycina attacked Gaelen out of anger after that, blaming him for Caith's death, and in a blow made careless in her anger, she made the scars on his face and took out his eye. Kaycina fled then, leaving Gaelen to tend to his wounds on his own.
His eye became infected, and he traveled to a city in hopes of getting healing. This he did, but in return he was asked to take care of a feud between that healer and another. Gaelen refused at first, but accepted after he was threatened by the healer. The home of the rival was destroyed, and Gaelen left the city to wander the surrounding desert.
For the next four hundred years, Gaelen wandered, sometimes taking up temporary residence in a city. He fought often and hard, becoming something of a mercenary. He became a hero in some areas, a villain to be destroyed in others. There was even a none-too-flattering book written about him. In his late four-hundreds however, he slowed down as his temper began to ease. For reasons unknown, he no longer felt the need to destroy something whenever he became angry, no longer became aroused by every tiny insult. He says now that he finally gained some sense around that time.
Now, he stays away from cities for the most part. He lives in a cave complex within an enormous rock mesa now, and ventures out to bask in the sun, to hunt, or simply to wander. He gets lonely at times, and he has considered searching for company, but he has never pursued this.
Greatest Strength: Physical strength and stamina. He is powerful, and can travel for weeks on minimal food and water. His scales are somewhat thinner than average for his species, but he has a great tolerance for pain. Also, his intellect is sharp. He is a logical thinker, and is not good at solving problems through imagination however.
Greatest Weakness: Flight. He can stay in the air for maybe fifteen minutes before he begins to get tired, and perhaps another forty if he truly pushes himself and uses all his strength to remain aloft, but he is slow and cannot maneuver well in the air. It would be faster for him to run than to fly in most cases. Getting off the ground, as well, is very difficult. Normally, he needs to be someplace high up before he can get into the air. In addition, the wind needs to be pretty strong in order for him to get into the air at all, regardless of where he takes off from.
Also, the hole where his eye used to be can be considered a weakness, as it is very sensitive, and if a foe were to challenge him in a dust storm or something similar, he would be quite distracted.
In addition, he is somewhat slow, so a fast opponent could possibly dodge his blows. One that could fly well could attack from above as well.
Example of Roleplay: A great, dark shadow swept over the small village, the edge of either wingtip at either side of the small community. The dragon that flew overhead meant them no harm. It was simply easier to complete his current objective through flight than by walking. What was this objective? Food. Gaelen had not eaten in several days, and he was becoming hungry. There was no point in delaying his hunt, so he had ventured out of his cave and across the sand.
A powerful flap of his great wings sent him upwards slightly, and the updraft he had just entered served to push him higher. His one good eye was trained on the ground, searching for his quarry.
There!
A herd of mammals, not unlike antelope, were grazing below. Gaelen's shadow passed over part of the herd, and all of the members were off in an instant, running as one away from the threat. They were fast, faster than Gaelen, but he dropped into a low-angled dive that allowed him to travel more quickly than they. When he came close to the ground, he leveled out, then landed in the middle of the herd. Three of the angelope died under his claws, and he watched the rest scatter, letting them run. He would be satisfied by these three for some time.
